What should you do with an old or unfinished website?

Many businesses have an old site: made years ago, its developer unreachable, not displaying properly on a phone, or left unfinished somewhere. Starting from scratch isn't always necessary; sometimes continuing the existing project is cheaper and faster. To decide, you first need to see the situation.

Signs your site needs renewing

  • ✓On a phone the text overflows or the buttons are hard to tap
  • ✓Pages load slowly
  • ✓The browser shows a "not secure" warning
  • ✓You can't update the content yourself
  • ✓You can't reach the person who built the site
  • ✓You can't be found on Google or your ranking has dropped

Continue or start over?

A site with a sound foundation whose design has merely aged or been neglected can usually be repaired and continued. A site with security holes, written in old technology with tangled code may be less costly to rebuild.

To say which, we need to see the code and the design. That is why in both cases the first step is a technical review.

What does a technical review cover?

When checking a site's health, we look at:

  • ✓Speed and mobile appearance
  • ✓Security and outdated components
  • ✓Basic SEO gaps for Google
  • ✓Code quality and whether it can be continued
  • ✓Who holds the domain, hosting and admin access

Secure the access first

If you have parted ways with the previous developer, the most important job is making sure the domain and hosting account are in your name. If you don't have them, they must be taken over before renewal work begins.

If you don't have access to the source code, admin panel passwords and database, these must be handed over or recreated.

What does Webora do?

For websites and mobile apps built by another team or left unfinished, we do a free technical review. After the review we explain plainly what can be kept, what needs renewing and the approximate scope. If you decide not to continue, you still have a clear report showing your project's condition.
