An online shop for a small business: where to start?

Selling online is no longer reserved for big brands; any business with a good product can open its own shop. But a few basic questions need answering before you start. Here is a path you can follow step by step when setting up an online shop.

1. Prepare your products

Every product needs a clear photo, a short and honest description, a weight or size, and a price. Products shot on a clean white background in the same light look professional.

If you have many products, you will need categories and filters, for example sweet, savoury and loose. Visitors should find what they are looking for in two clicks.

2. Choose a secure payment provider

Customers enter their card details not on your site but at a secure inter-bank payment institution. In Turkey, providers such as iyzico and PayTR are widely used.

The application needs your company details and a bank account; starting this in parallel with building the site saves time.

3. Plan your shipping process from the start

What happens when an order comes in? Will you write the shipping label by hand, or will the system notify the carrier automatically?

On a site with carrier integration, the order and tracking code are created automatically, the customer is informed and you save time. Decide in advance which carriers you work with and your free-shipping threshold.

4. Manage stock and prices yourself

When a product sells out, the site must not say "in stock"; when a price changes, it must update immediately. For that you need an easy admin panel of your own.

From the panel you should be able to add products, change prices and stock, create discount coupons and view orders without needing a developer.

5. Don't forget the legal pages

There are pages every online shop must have. Prepare them from the start so you aren't caught unprepared:

  • ✓Distance sales agreement
  • ✓Privacy and data-protection (KVKK) notice
  • ✓Return and cancellation terms
  • ✓Delivery and shipping information

A real example: Dilberoğlu Kurabiye

For Dilberoğlu, in its 27th year of cookie-making, we designed an online shop with 48 varieties. It has sweet, savoury and loose filters, a flavour picker with photos for the 2 kg box, secure payment with iyzico and shipping integration. The shop owner manages products, prices, stock and coupons from their own panel.

You can explore this project in detail on our Projects page.
